Headache/Migraine-Focused Neurotherapies
01
Vestibular Rehabilitation
Purpose: Reduce dizziness, vertigo, and imbalance often associated with migraines (especially vestibular migraine).
Methods:
- Gaze stabilization exercises (moving eyes while head moves)
-Habituation exercises (gradual exposure to movement or visual triggers)
- Balance and gait training on stable and unstable surfaces
Rationale: Dysfunction in the vestibular system can trigger or worsen migraines; retraining the brain’s vestibular pathways can decrease symptom severity.
02
Neurorehabilitation / Cognitive Rehabilitation
Purpose: Improve cognitive symptoms like brain fog, attention deficits, and processing speed during or after migraines.
Methods:
- Cognitive exercises (memory, attention, executive function)
- Sensorimotor integration exercises
- Dual-task training (performing cognitive and motor tasks simultaneously)
Rationale: Enhances neuroplasticity and strengthens brain networks that may be impaired by chronic migraine activity.
03
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)
Purpose: Reduce neuroinflammation, improve oxygenation, and support neuronal repair.
Methods: Patient breathes 100% oxygen in a pressurized chamber for prescribed sessions.
Rationale: Increased oxygen delivery can improve mitochondrial function, reduce oxidative stress, and potentially lower migraine frequency or severity.
04
Laser Therapy / Photobiomodulation
Purpose: Reduce pain, inflammation, and oxidative stress in nervous tissue.
Methods: Low-level laser or red/near-infrared light applied to areas like temples, skull, or cervical spine.
Rationale: Stimulates mitochondrial activity, enhances cellular repair, and can modulate neural activity involved in migraine pathways
05
Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS)
Purpose: Modulate autonomic nervous system activity and reduce migraine-related pain.
Methods: Electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve (non-invasive or implanted devices).
Rationale: Can inhibit pain pathways, reduce cortical spreading depression, and normalize autonomic nervous system function often dysregulated in migraines.
06
Lab Testing and Screening
Purpose: Identify triggers, metabolic contributors, or underlying conditions that exacerbate migraines.
Common Tests:
- Nutritional deficiencies (magnesium, B12, vitamin D)
- Hormonal imbalances (thyroid, estrogen, cortisol)
- Inflammatory markers (CRP, cytokines)
- Blood sugar and metabolic panel
Rationale: Functional neurologists focus on treating root causes, not just symptoms, to reduce migraine frequency and intensity.
07
Comprehensive Physical and Neurological Exam
Purpose: Assess structural, neurological, and musculoskeletal factors contributing to headaches.
Methods:
- Cranial nerve evaluation
- Cervical spine and TMJ assessment
- Postural and gait analysis
- Reflexes, balance, and coordination testing
Rationale: Detects physical or neural dysfunctions that may trigger or perpetuate migraine episodes.
08
Nutrition and Supplements
Purpose: Correct deficiencies and support neurological health to reduce migraine risk.
Common Approaches:
- Magnesium supplementation for neural excitability
- Vitamin B12, folate, and riboflavin for mitochondrial support
- Omega-3 fatty acids for anti-inflammatory effects
- Hydration and electrolyte optimization
Rationale: Nutritional support addresses metabolic or inflammatory contributors to migraines, often enhancing other therapies’ effectiveness.

Understanding Headaches and Migraines
Headaches and migraines can be debilitating, affecting your daily activities and overall well-being. At the Socal Brain Center, we offer a holistic approach to addressing various types of headaches and migraines, including:
- Tension Headaches: These are often caused by stress, muscle tension, or poor posture. We provide effective treatments to relieve tension headaches and help you manage stress.
- Cluster Headaches: Characterized by severe, sharp pain around one eye or temple, cluster headaches can be excruciating. Our clinic offers specialized cluster headache treatment to reduce their frequency and intensity.
- Migraines: Migraines are often accompanied by severe pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound. Often occurring with auras and intense neurological symptoms. We provide comprehensive migraine treatment to alleviate symptoms and prevent future attacks.
- Occipital Neuralgia: Occipital neuralgia is a condition in which the nerves that run from the top of the spinal cord to the scalp become inflamed or irritated, causing sharp, shooting, or aching pain at the back of the head, often radiating to the scalp, behind the eyes, or the neck.
- Cervical Headaches/TMJ: TMJ and cervical headaches are types of head and neck pain often linked to muscle tension and joint issues. TMJ headaches stem from problems with the temporomandibular joint—the hinge connecting your jaw to your skull—leading to jaw pain, facial pressure, and sometimes headaches. Cervical headaches originate from the neck (cervical spine) and can cause pain at the base of the skull that radiates to the head, often triggered by poor posture, muscle strain, or neck injuries.
